What are the 4 types of cells found in the epidermis?


Keratinocytes:
  • the most numerous of epidermis cells (90%-95%)
  • contains keratin (protein)
  • protects and waterproffs the skin

Melanocytes:
  • 5-8% of epidermal cells
  • produce melanin
  • responsible for variations in skin color
  • absorbs UV light


Langerhan:
  • small number
  • immune cells located in the skin (help fight infection)
  • easily damaged by UV light

Merkel:
  • least numerous
  • found in deepest layers of epidermis
  • funtion in sense of touch
